One question I get asked often is: "How often should I vacuum my pool?"
The short answer? For most residential pools, once a week is a good rule of thumb. But the real answer depends on your pool, your landscaping, the weather and how often it's used.
No two pools are exactly alike which is why I always look at the whole picture instead of following the same routine for every customer.
Every Pool Is Different
Some pools stay remarkably clean. Others collect leaves every afternoon. I've seen pools that sit under large oak trees and others that barely collect a single leaf all week.
A few things that affect how often your pool needs vacuuming include:
- Trees surrounding the pool
- Windy conditions
- Heavy rain
- Pets that swim
- Frequent pool parties
- Landscaping
- Nearby construction
- Whether the pool is screened
The more debris entering the water, the more often the pool will need attention.

A screened enclosure helps reduce leaves and larger debris but it doesn't eliminate maintenance. Dust, pollen, insects and fine debris still make their way into the water.
Vacuuming Does More Than Improve Appearance
Most people vacuum because they see dirt on the bottom. While that's certainly important, vacuuming also removes:
- Dirt
- Sand
- Small leaves
- Dead algae
- Organic debris
- Pollen
Leaving debris on the floor of your pool allows it to break down which places extra demand on your sanitizer and filtration system.
Removing it early helps keep your water cleaner and easier to balance.
Don't Forget the Walls and Steps
One mistake I see homeowners make is focusing only on the bottom of the pool.
Algae doesn't usually begin on the floor. It often starts along walls, steps, corners, tile lines, and other areas where circulation isn't as strong. That's why brushing is just as important as vacuuming. Brushing loosens dirt and algae before it becomes a bigger problem, allowing your filtration system to remove it.
Automatic Pool Cleaners Are Helpful...But Not Perfect
Robotic cleaners and automatic vacuums have become incredibly popular and they're a great tool. Many of my customers use them between service visits. But they're not a complete replacement for regular maintenance.
Automatic cleaners don't:
- Test water chemistry
- Balance chemicals
- Empty skimmer baskets
- Inspect equipment
- Clean filters
- Check circulation
They're a helpful assistant, not a complete maintenance plan.
Vacuuming Is Only One Part of Pool Care
When I visit a customer's pool each week, vacuuming is just one item on my checklist.
I'm also:
- Testing water chemistry
- Adjusting chemicals
- Brushing walls and steps
- Skimming the surface
- Emptying baskets
- Inspecting pumps and filters
- Looking for small problems before they become expensive repairs
Vacuuming keeps the pool looking clean. Everything else keeps it healthy.

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is, "My pool looks clean, so it must be fine."
A pool can look beautiful while its chemistry is quietly damaging pumps, heaters, filters and pool surfaces. That's why regular testing is just as important as cleaning.
Consistency Is the Secret
I've found that homeowners who stay on a regular maintenance schedule spend less time dealing with algae, cloudy water and unexpected repairs. It's much easier to maintain a clean pool than it is to restore one after problems have developed.

Vacuuming is important but if it's the only thing you're doing, you're only taking care of part of your pool.
Healthy water comes from a combination of:

- Consistent maintenance
When all of those pieces work together, your pool stays cleaner, safer and much easier to enjoy.
